In 1815, there were two major political factions in France. The Royalists supported the king, Louis XVIII. The Bonapartists supported Napoleon Bonaparte. However since Bonaparte had been defeated and exiled to the island of Elba, it was a political crime to be a Bonapartist.
On February 28th, 1815, a cargo ship, the Pharon, arrived at the port of Marseilles, one day behind schedule. On deck was the captain's mate, ninteen-year-old Edmond Dantes.
